What is Redlining?

Redlining was a practice put into place in the early 70s by real estate agencies. It was a practice that prevented communites of color (specifically black communities) from attaining home ownership. Real estate agents would give a letter grade to a specific community to show what would be high or low risk for a home ownership loan. They would strategically grade black communities with a D rating- meaning it was high risk for a loan, and white communities with an A rating- meaning that community was at low risk for a loan. Thus more property was being bought in white communities therefor allowing for more money to be put into the betterment of the community such as better schools, more maintenance repairs, and more money are architectural freedom. Whereas in black communities and communities of color, without money being put into those areas, the communities became very run down, the schools were not very good, and poverty rates were high.
